These Android and iOS builds will crash your apps more often

A recent study of 20,000 apps reveals which Android and iOS builds are more likely to crash your apps. Those sporting a device powered by Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) are most likely to see the app they are using suddenly stop working. According to the study, this happens about 2.62% of the time. Android 4.4 (KitKat) is close behind with apps likely to crash at a 2.47% rate. Apps on Android crash on average 2.5% of the time. While it is early, Android 5.0 apps have been crashing at a below average 2% rate.

The study also reveals that apps running on iOS 8 crash 2.14% of the time. That is down from the 2.31% rate that iOS 8 users experienced about a month ago. But it is higher than the rather steady 2% crash rate that iOS 7 users have had to live with.

Apps crash for a variety of reasons, some of which have to do with software glitches and some are related to hardware issues. Sometimes the problem can be boiled down to an issue with a specific device. But in the scheme of things, we are only talking about an extra crash or three out of 1,000 times an app is loaded on a phone.
